Silene vulgaris

Hardy herbaceous perennial with a balloon like bulge behind the white five petaled flower.

Uses - Widely eaten in the Mediterranean area, young leaves are edible raw and older leaves cooked, they have a slightly bitter pea like flavour.

Growing conditions - Does best in fertile, well drained soil that is on the alkaline side. Site in full sun or partial shade.

Height - 70cm. Spread - 60cm.

Good for pollinators - Yes, bees, butterflies, moths and lots of other insects all benefit from bladder campion.
