We believe in working in harmony with nature. On our piece of land we like to thoroughly mix our plants up into a polyculture, so trees and crops are grown mingling with cut flowers, herbs and beneficial wildflowers, many of which are edible.
Our plants are grown in peat free compost, this has been challenging to say the least! But we keep on trying with different blends trying to get that perfect peat free compost for all the different plant needs. The rate of peat extraction is completely unsustainable and once the peat bogs are gone, they're gone.

Encourage wildlife by providing natural food and habitat
It's really important to leave the garden in 'a mess' over winter. That's our excuse anyway! Many birds feed on the seeds, a vital source of food over the harsh winter months. Leaving piles of branches also provide shelter from the weather and from predators like the sparrow hawk, although they need to eat too! Keeping food for birds in winter also means they're more likely to stay around to maintain a natural balance throughout the year.
As winter turns to spring we start to think about the plants we want to grow and eat in the coming year. This is the time to put down our home made compost to feed the soil and to hold that all essential moisture in the ground before the hot dry weather comes.
Make use of 'the weeds' let some nettles grow if you have the space, pick the top leaves to cook with or use them as a liquid plant food. They're a very important source of food for caterpillars of peacock butterflies and red admiral for example.
